The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
