Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which included plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
